The fish featured in your aquarium is the striking Green Terror Cichlid, scientifically known as Andinoacara rivulatus (specifically the highly popular Gold Saum variant). They are robust, highly energetic freshwater fish native to the river basins of western Ecuador and Peru, and are deeply admired in the aquarium hobby for their magnificent appearance and fierce presence.

Appearance and Physical Features

Vibrant Iridescence: Their bodies are covered in metallic, iridescent green and blue scales that shimmer intensely under aquarium lighting, contrasted against dark olive or gray base tones.

The "Saum" (Border): The most defining characteristic of the Gold Saum variant is the thick, fiery orange-to-gold edging lining the tops of their dorsal (top) and caudal (tail) fins.

Intricate Facial Patterns: Their faces feature beautiful, wavy electric-blue or green metallic streaks running across the cheeks and gill covers.

Sexual Dimorphism: Males grow significantly larger than females—reaching up to 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30 cm)—and develop beautifully elongated, pointed fins. As they mature, alpha males also grow a very prominent nuchal hump on their foreheads.

Temperament and Behavior

True to Their Name: The title "Terror" is well-earned. They are inherently highly territorial and aggressive, especially as they cross into adulthood. They are bold, dominant swimmers that like to claim specific areas of the tank (usually around rocks or caves) as their personal kingdom.

Intelligent and Alert: Much like Oscar cichlids, Green Terrors are highly conscious of their surroundings. They watch their owners through the glass, quickly recognize feeding schedules, and display distinct, expressive personalities.

Substrate Diggers: They love to rearrange their environment. It is incredibly common to watch them pick up gravel in their mouths and dig large pits to establish nesting or resting zones.

Care and Habitat Requirements

Tank Size: Due to their large size and high bioload, a single Green Terror requires a minimum of a 50-gallon tank, while a breeding pair or a multi-species cichlid setup demands 75 to 100+ gallons.

Filtration and Water Parameters: They produce a lot of waste and require heavy, high-turnover mechanical and biological filtration. They thrive in clean water with a temperature of 20°C to 24°C (68°F to 75°F) and a pH between 6.5 and 8.0.

Diet: Unfussy, enthusiastic omnivores. In captivity, they should be fed high-quality large cichlid pellets or sticks, supplemented regularly with frozen or fresh proteins like bloodworms, krill, earthworms, and occasional vegetable matters to maintain their radiant coloration.
