The fish featured in your original aquarium photo (image 3722.jpg) is a juvenile Tiger Oscar Cichlid, scientifically known as Astronotus ocellatus. Oscars are legendary in the fish-keeping world, native to the slow-moving waters of the Amazon River basin in South America, and are often referred to as the "dogs of the aquarium world" due to their incredible intelligence.

Appearance and Physical Features

Marbled Velvet Pattern: The Tiger Oscar features a beautiful, dark charcoal or velvet-black base coloration broken up by erratic, marbled streaks of fiery orange and bright red along its flanks.

The "Eye" Spot (Ocellus): If you look closely at the base of their tail fin, you will see a distinct black spot ringed in orange. In the wild, this "false eye" mimics a head to confuse piranhas and other predators, preventing them from nipping the Oscar's fins from behind.

Rapid Growth: The juvenile fish in your photo will not stay small for long! Oscars are famous for their explosive growth rates, easily growing from a tiny 2-inch baby to a robust, thick-bodied monster fish reaching 12 to 14 inches (30 to 35 cm) in length.

Temperament and Unique Personality

Water Puppies: Oscars possess cognitive abilities far beyond standard aquarium fish. They quickly learn to recognize their exact owners, will swim over to watch television or room activity, and will eagerly shake their bodies at the glass to "beg" for food.

"Oscar Tantrums": They are notoriously dramatic. If you rearrange their tank decorations or introduce a new filter piece, an Oscar might sulk at the bottom of the tank on its side, completely ignoring you until it decides it's happy again.

Relentless Aquascapers: Oscars love to redecorate. They will grab plastic plants, heaters, and small rocks in their massive mouths and carry them across the tank to drop them where they think they belong.

Care and Habitat Requirements

Massive Tank Demands: Because of their massive adult size and heavy waste production, a single adult Oscar requires a minimum of a 75-gallon aquarium, while a pair needs 100 to 125 gallons.

High-Turnover Filtration: Oscars are incredibly messy eaters and produce a very high biological load. Keeping them healthy requires strong canister filters and large, weekly water changes to keep toxic nitrates low. They thrive at standard tropical temperatures of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).

Diet: Enthusiastic carnivores. They should be fed high-quality, large floating cichlid pellets as their daily staple, supplemented with freeze-dried krill, earthworms, and crickets.
